One Piece: How Jewelry Bonney Could Restore Kuma’s Memory

Bonney is working to restore her father’s humanity, but the steps she’s taking to achieve that goal might be making things much harder for her.

Jewelry Bonney made her way to Egghead with one specific purpose in mind. She wants Dr. Vegapunk to restore the humanity he took from her father Bartholomew Kuma by turning him into a cyborg. She seems to have taken a big step forward by finding the room where Kuma’s old memories are being held. However, this may come with its own set of difficulties.

Kuma’s memories aren’t being stored on a drive or anything compact like that. He used his Paw-Paw powers to expel the memories from his body in the form of a giant bubble. There is a way for someone besides him to transport these memories, but then it would raise the question of how to get them back into him. Bonney is willing to try this method, so perhaps in classic One Piece fashion, there is a way to get these memories back to her father and restore his humanity.

How Can Bonney Get Kuma’s Memory Back to Him?

There are a couple of ways to get Kuma’s memories back to him. The first is to bring him to Egghead and have him step into the bubble that contains his memories. Unfortunately, Kuma is currently climbing the Red Line for unknown reasons, so that option is unlikely to be fulfilled.

Since Kuma can’t be taken to the bubble, the bubble will have to be taken to him. Bonney will have to step into the bubble and take the memories into herself, a process that is already underway. If this turns out anything like when Zoro took in the pain Kuma expelled from Luffy, this should end with all of the contents of the bubble inside Bonney. This would effectively make her the compact means of transportation for her father’s memories.

However, even if Bonney gets Kuma’s memories off of Egghead, she still has to find a way to put them back into their original owner. She’d have to somehow convince Kuma to use his powers to expel the memories from her and take them back into himself. Whether this can be done depends on whether Kuma has enough cognizance to take a request from someone not associated with the World Government; alternatively, if he has an Authority Chip like the Seraphim, Vegapunk can simply order him to do it. It should be possible to determine whether the Former Warlord has any free will left by the time it’s revealed why he’s climbing the Red Line.

There’s also the question of whether Bonney really means to give the memories back to Kuma. Her true purpose for taking in these memories isn’t necessarily to get them back to Kuma but rather to understand him better. If she returns his memories, all of the efforts she put into understanding him could be lost. The only way this doesn’t happen is if she can somehow remember reading Kuma’s memories, then those memories can be returned to their owner and she can keep her character arc.

In any case, Bonney’s goal is going to be an exhaustive one. Just looking over all of Kuma’s memories, even the painful ones, is already a challenge for her. Even if she knows the technical process of transferring the memories back to their owner, that owner is currently someplace where it’s hard to reach him. She’s going to need a lot of time, effort, and determination if she ever wants a proper reunion with her father.
