More than a mile beneath the Pacific Ocean, is a seascape of oddly shaped corals and a glass sponge named after ET In 2017, on a submerged volcano a mile and a half underwater in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a team of scientists were left gasping in wonder at a scene they called the “forest of the weird”. Instead of trees, the forest was made up of oddly shaped corals, including some that resembled frizzy bottlebrushes (Rhodaniridogorgia) and others that were flattened and harp-shaped (Narella) with leggy, pink brittlestars, relatives of starfish, wrapped around their branches. The corals…

An ancient forest in Utah considered to be the largest single living thing in the world is dying, according to scientists. The Pando aspen, a gigantic expanse of 40,000 trees that are are all clones with identical compositions, has long been known as the “trembling giant” and covers over 106 acres in Utah’s Fishlake National Forest. The vast expanse is assumed to have one connected underground root system and is thought to be approximately 80,000 years old. However, recent years have placed the Pando under enormous stress, which includes the impact of extended drought, fire suppression, human development and the…

Oleksandr Zinchenko has thanked Manchester City’s fans for the reception he was afforded on his return to his former club last night. The Ukraine international spent six trophy-laden years at the Etihad Stadium before he was granted a move to Arsenal in the summer. Zinchenko has played a pivotal role in transforming the Gunners into title contenders but was forced to settle for a place on the bench for last night’s FA Cup fourth round tie. The 26-year-old was introduced midway through the second period but was unable to help force the equaliser that would have secured Mikel Arteta’s side a replay. Zinchenko was warmly…
Liverpool are ninth in the Premier League and that sort of form for a top four club would usually mean the manager’s head is on the chopping block, but not for Jurgen Klopp Jurgen Klopp insists he’s still a top manager despite a disastrous season. But the German boss candidly admits if it was another manager in charge at Anfield, they’d be facing the sack. Thankfully, Klopp has huge credit in the bank and the full backing of the club’s Boston-based owners after four trophy-laden seasons. So he’s in no danger despite Liverpool languishing 21 points behind leaders Arsenal and ten points off a…
Christian Eriksen was seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches. The Danish midfielder seems to have sustained an injury in Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Reading in the FA Cup. Eriksen was substituted for Fred in the 57th minute, but no one thought it would be such a severe injury. He has been one of United’s most reliable and consistent players this season. Eriksen often goes unnoticed because of the way he plays, but he has been vital to United’s overall success. The 30 year old often drops deep to facilitate the build-up phase, helping Casemiro. In attack, he is very…
Pep Guardiola has reportedly asked Manchester City to sign Enzo Fernandez and the Argentine could be an ideal alternative to Jude Bellingham as the Citizens search for an Ilkay Gundogan heir. According to recent reports from Spain, Fernandez is top of Guardiola’s list as the Spanish manager looks to add another central midfielder at the Etihad, with Bellingham perhaps preferring a move to either Real Madrid or Liverpool. The initial report claims that City have liked the World Cup winner since his time with River Plate but if they are to prise him away from Benfica this year, they may well be forced to pay his release clause, which currently stands…
Liverpool players have wasted a lot of chances this season but they do have the third best player in the Premier League for creating them Darwin Nunez has faced almost constant criticism since joining Liverpool. Severe scrutiny is the price to pay when playing for one of the world’s biggest football clubs, and he did himself no favours by being sent off in his first start in England. Much of the ridicule of Nunez’s performances stems from him missing big chances in big moments. An optimist would point out that at least he was in the right place, that the…
Wout Weghorst is beginning to really settle in as a Manchester United player. His first goal will do him the world of good. The on loan striker netted his opening goal as a Red Devils player in Manchester United’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg win over Nottingham Forest. The Netherlands international was quickest to react to the rebound from Antony’s shot, and struck his own effort first time into the net. His goal came at a crucial moment, doubling United’s lead just before half-time, killing off Forest’s hope of a revival. United went on to win the match 3-0, with one foot firmly…
While we’re used to see people usually bonding with pups or cats or farm animals, this extremely odd friendship between a diver and a fish baffles everyone. And like it isn’t weird enough already, these two unusual buddies share this special connection for over 25 years, now, writes daily-cuteness. It all started many years ago, when the Japanese diver Hiroyuki Arakawa has been appointed to supervise a ‘torii’ – a sacred shrine to the Shinto religion. But this wasn’t like any other ‘torii’ as it stands beneath the surface of Tateyama Bay in Japan. Given its spiritual importance, Hiroyuki had to…
Asns are used to unusual wildlife encounters, such as the recent attempt by a snake to consume a bat in Brisbane. Tony Morrison, Redland’s Snake Catcher, captured a large carpet python pulling a bat up a tree. The python appeared to struggle with its meal, even though the bat had long since ᴘᴀssᴇᴅ ᴀᴡᴀʏ. The python tried to consume the bat head first while its body was still wrapped around the deceased animal. The python, however, struggled to get its head around the bat due to its pointed wings and sharp talons. Mr. Morrison claimed in an interview with Daily…
John Aldridge has his say on a difficult year for Mohamed Salah and the players set to be out of contract in his latest column It’s been a difficult twelve months for Mohamed Salah and I think it is now starting to show. Having endured heartbreak in the Africa Cup of Nations final and World Cup qualifiers with Egypt in the early stages of last year, he’s not been the same player for Liverpool since. Not on a consistent basis anyway. He has seven goals in 19 Premier League matches this season, it’s his worst patch of form since he joined the…
Manchester United thought when they forked out £86m to Ajax for Brazilian winger Antony in the summer that they were getting a ready-made world beater capable of becoming the catalyst for getting bums off seats inside Old Trafford. During the club’s 3-2 defeat away to Arsenal on Sunday, Antony was unceremoniously hooked off in the 71st minute for Fred. Evidence, if ever it was needed, that he isn’t trusted to provide the winning spark against top opposition. But, despite United manager Erik ten Hag endearing himself to the club’s faithful fanbase and seemingly waving a magic wand over the the team’s humiliating 21/22 season, the acquisition…

A male leopard spent five hours with its head stuck in a metal pot in a village in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan. Local people told reporters that the animal appeared to have been foraging for water, and then got its head stuck inside the vessel. The confused and frightened animal wandered around the village as residents took pictures and videos. Wildlife officials eventually tranquilised the leopard and used a saw to remove the pot from its head. They told the local media that it seemed none the worse for its ordeal. A recent wildlife census estimates that India…

The fossilized remains of a 419 million-year-old forest have been found in China, giving researchers new insights into a time when life began to emerge from the sea. The site, which is approximately the size of 35 soccer fields (250,000 square meters, or 2.6 million square feet), was discovered near Xinhang in China’s Anhui province. The Devonian era-forest was packed with lycopsid, a branchless tree similar to palm. The area is one of only three forests like it known to exist, with the others located in America and Norway. “The large density as well as the small size of the…

Jurgen Klopp isn’t making life easy for Harvey Elliott at Liverpool right now. The hope will be that it’s worth it in the end. Harvey Elliott is the only Liverpool player to feature in every game this season. At the same time, he’s having a mixed season – one where we’re only really seeing the best of the 19-year-old in bursts. But the reason why perhaps became clear this week. Elliott, after all, grabbed headlines with an extraordinary goal against Wolves in midweek. It was ‘astonishing’, in the words of Luis Garcia on Twitter. The former Reds’ no.10 labelled Elliott ‘brilliant’ for…
Paul Scholes and Ian Wright accused Bruno Fernandes of ‘looking for a penalty’ during Manchester United’s 3-2 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday. In the first half, with the game goalless, Fernandes appealed for a penalty when he had the chance to knock the ball past Aaron Ramsdale and put the ball into an empty net. Instead, he proceeded to initiate contact with the Arsenal goalkeeper, went down, the on-field referee waved play on and he wasted a very good opportunity. Unless you are a Manchester United fan, someone like Fernandes isn’t exactly a fan favourite for neutral supporters. The £68 million star (Sky…

The world’s oldest tree, a 9,500-year-old Norwegian Spruce named “Old Tjikko,” after Professor Leif Kullman’s Siberian husky, continues to grow in Sweden. Discovered in 2004 by Kullman, professor of Physical Geography at Umeå University, the age of the tree was determined using carbon-14 dating. “During the ice age sea level was 120 meters lower than today and much of what is now the North Sea in the waters between England and Norway was at that time forest,” Professor Kullman told Aftonbladet. Winds and low temperatures made Old Tjikko “like a bonsai tree…Big trees cannot get as old as this.” More info: National Geographic (h/t: mymodernmet, aftonbladet) Image…
In 2020, scientists found sparkling Peinaleopolynoe on hydothermal vents in the eastern Pacific – and were irresistibly reminded of the king of rock’n’roll Nearly 4,000 metres (13,000 feet) underwater in the Pescadero basin in the Gulf of California lie some of the Pacific’s deepest hydrothermal vents – and they’re covered in small iridescent worms. “You’ll see little pink sparkly worms, blue ones, red ones, black ones and white ones,” says Avery Hiley, a graduate researcher at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego. These are hungry scale-worms, or Peinaleopolynoe – peinaléos meaning “hungry” or “famished” in Greek – named…
