Scientists from the South Australian Museum are working out what killed a humpback whale found floating off the coast near Port Wakefield.
The six-metre carcass was lifted onto a trailer and driven to Adelaide on Wednesday for scientists to do an autopsy.
David Stemmer from the museum says the carcass will be used in scientific research and that may improve conservation efforts.
“We take a whole range of measurements and will take a lot of samples, some for toxic contaminant analysis like heavy metals, others for genetics and will examine it carefully from the inside, peeling back the blubber and seeing if it was hit by something,” he said.
The skeleton may eventually be put on display.
