These dramatic images capture the moment a bald eagle flies in pursuit of a plucky heron and then grabs his freshly caught dinner.
In the awesome sequence of pictures, the bald eagle was spotted swooping on the great blue heron’s catch with its deadly claws. But instead of giving up its meal, the gutsy heron tried to fly away from the determined eagle with the fish its in mouth.
After initially breaking free, the bird of prey closed in again on the heron and it was finally forced to release the fish, which was swiftly plucked out the water by the hungry eagle. A large branch in a nearby evergreen then served as the perfect table top for the eagle to devour its hard-fought meal.
Photographer Ken Archer, 53, said he was thrilled to capture the exhilarating event in the Hood Canal in Washington.
He commented: ‘The extreme flight manoeuvre performed by the pair reminded me of WWII fighter planes in a dog fight, similar to those I had seen on television years ago as a youngster.
‘At last, five years of traipsing out to the oyster beds several times every May, with high hopes of filming such an event it had materialized right in front of me at close range.
‘Later that evening, a celebration was certainly in order!’
