Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director, James Gunn offers an update on the status of Thor and Rocket’s friendship, and it’s quite heartbreaking.
James Gunn offers an update about Thor and Rocket’s friendship in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s a bit heartbreaking after everything they have been through. Formed in Avengers: Infinity War, the pair’s relationship progressed in the next five years after Thanos’ snap and into Avengers: Endgame. Even after the Infinity Saga was finished, Thor and Rocket continued to be pals as seen in Thor: Love and Thunder.
A fan asked Gunn on Twitter if Rocket and Thor have remained in contact throughout the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and unfortunately, his answer is quite saddening. Check out his full response below:
Unfortunately, Gunn didn’t provide any additional information about why Rocket and Thor are no longer in contact with each other. That being said, it makes sense that they haven’t kept in touch because both of them have been through some personal issues.
When Can Thor & Rocket Reunite In The MCU’s Multiverse Saga
After Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn will work exclusively on DC Universe. This means that Gunn will no longer have any creative control over what comes next for Rocket and the rest of the cosmic heroes. Given that, there’s always a chance that Marvel Studios revisits Rocket and Thor’s friendship moving forward in the Multiverse Saga.
For what it’s worth, there are already a couple of projects that Rocket and Thor could reunite again. The burgeoning fight against Kang the Conqueror in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. As one of the best Guardian of the Galaxy and Earth’s Mightiest Hero pairing in the MCU, fans are undoubtedly interested in seeing them again working together.
The post-credits scene for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 confirms that Rocket and his new team will continue to be active in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. No clear indication when or where he will re-emerge in the franchise, but it’s highly unlikely that Marvel Studios ends the Guardians of the Galaxy sub-franchise, considering how popular the superhero team is. It may take a while, however, before they front another blockbuster again.
