Dua Lipa transported us back to Versacepolis at the American Music Awards. Confused? You obviously missed the boat to the brand’s spring/summer 2021 show, where Donatella Versace showed her latest splashy collection from an underwater settlement ruled by Medusa. It was only a matter of time before a pop star tried on the joyous aquatic edit reminiscent of the house’s “Trésor de la Mer” spring/summer 1992 prints, and Dua Lipa dived straight in for music’s big night.

The singer, who won the award for best pop/rock song for her single “Don’t Start Now” and went on to perform her hit “Levitating”, connected to the AMAs remotely from London’s Royal Albert Hall. The entire atrium was her oyster as Lipa and her rhinestoned, starfished mini dress posed in the stalls and backstage for an Instagram photo series shot by Pixie Levinson.
The slinky party dress, which was modelled by Adut Akech on Versace’s utopian runway, quickly sold out during Moda Operandi’s Versace spring/summer 2021 trunk show despite its £8,882 price tag. It seems that Donatella is not the only one currently seeking escapism – whether via beaded clam-shell bralets or just fantastical under-the-sea daydreams. While dripping sequins and running riot in the Royal Albert Hall’s empty corridors, Lipa was the perfect embodiment of this mood.
