Ryan Reynolds, the actor and most recently soccer club owner, recently doled out thousands on rare whisky for fans of his Wrexham European football team and their recent promotion win.
The star of Deadpool, who along with friend and fellow actor Rob McElheney, bought the football club a couple of years ago. A documentary series followed their exploits and that of the team as it sought wins and redemption, looking for an elusive promotion in class.
With the most recent win that led to said promotion, Reynolds reportedly brought in 40 bottles of vintage whisky at about £1,000 each.
A story in The Sun cited a source, who said, “He had invited fans to sample the booze last week and left a load for after the game on Saturday … Ryan has been nothing but generous to Wrexham fans for their support, but they were stunned when he handed over the vintage whisky. He had invited fans to sample some of the booze last week and then left 40 bottles for them to enjoy on Saturday after the match.
The source went on to tell The Sun that the bottles cost £1,000 a piece, and it was partaken of. “They partied into the early hours and a few people were seen swilling from the bottles on Sunday morning when the Turf opened again.”
There was no word on what, exactly, whisky was consumed.
The Wrexham football club was promoted to League Two recently after defeating Boreham Wood 3-1.
The interesting after-party at the football club’s bar even saw fellow actor Paul Rudd celebrating with fans, while co-owner McElheney took a turn behind the bar.
Footage of the game showed Reynolds and McElheney crying tears of joy, celebrating as the match concluded.
Reynolds told the media immediately after, “One thing that’s running through my head over-and-over again is people said at the beginning ‘why Wrexham, why Wrexham?’ This is exactly why Wrexham. What’s happening right now is why.”
