Thor’s hammer Mjolnir is one of the most famous weapons in comics, but the God of Thunder isn’t the only one who has mastered its power.
As one of Marvel Comics’ mightiest Avengers, Thor is truly one of the most powerful heroes in comics. With his Asgardian strength and millennia of combat experience, there are few forces that can stand to go toe-to-toe with the God of Thunder. But every fan knows that Thor’s greatest strength is his connection to his hammer, Mjolnir.
More than a few heroes like Captain America and even Storm of the X-Men have wielded Mjolnir in the past, but it’s occasionally been wielded by enemies of Thor as well. Avengers: War Across Time has even demonstrated that Mjolnir’s creator Sindri can still lift it due to his hand in its creation. But it turns out that Sindri can not only lift Thor’s hammer – he can control it as well.
Mjolnir’s Creator Sindri is Unworthy (But Who Cares?)
Avengers: War Across Time #3 by Paul Levitz and Alan Davis finds the titular hero in combat against the Dwarf lord Sindri as he wields Mjolnir against its master, Thor. The God of Thunder doesn’t take this offense lightly, wrestling for control of his signature weapon against the very dwarf who forged it. With the aid of Captain America, the hammer is eventually freed form Sindri’s grip, but the villain demonstrates more control than anyone expected when he calls the hammer back to him to strike Thor himself.
Although this immediate conflict does end with Thor reclaiming Mjolnir, its vulnerability to Sindri is even greater than anyone thought. It’s one thing to be simply able to life Thor’s hammer, but for a foe like Sindri to be able to bend Mjolnir to his whim by virtue of his connection to its origins totally circumvents the hammer’s famous worthiness clause. And Sindri’s attack against the Avengers and the innocents they fight to protect don’t exactly prove his worth.
Thor’s Hammer is Now At Massive Risk
In combat against Sindri, or anyone else who may be able to exploit this loophole, Thor must remain constantly on guard lest he lose control of his greatest tool. This is a lesson he learns the hard way later in the issue, but it’s a habit he should be practicing regardless. After all, fans have seen on more than one occasion what Thor is like without Mjolnir, and it’s rarely a positive experience for him.
The Mighty Thor may be one of the Avengers’ strongest heroes, but even he can be vulnerable to an unexpected weakness. Sindri’s control over Mjolnir may be surprising, but the Odinson’s connection with his hammer should encourage him to be forever on guard. Hopefully next time, Marvel Comics’ Thor will learn his lesson about taking Mjolnir for granted.
