The Marvels first trailer came with tons of easter eggs, including Ms. Marvel’s bangle and the S.A.B.E.R. space station. Check out our breakdown.
The Marvels just released its first trailer. The next MCU movie, after Guardians 3, has just become the most anticipated Marvel project of the year. The Marvels stars three of our favorite superheroes and three of our favorite actresses in the Marvel universe. Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani will finally share the same screen and give us a spectacular light show as Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Ms. Marvel. It’s going to be an MCU team-up for the ages. And The Marvels trailer gave us a lot of easter eggs and hidden details that only the biggest MCU fans will have caught.
The new trailer for The Marvels brought back a lot of interesting bits from previous movies. It’s also answered many questions we’ve had about the future of the MCU. The easter eggs found in The Marvels trailer will surely delight every fan watching closely and begging for some callbacks and big additions from the comics. From S.A.B.E.R. to easter eggs from WandaVision and Captain Marvel, this trailer was packed with new material for every superfan. We even found out where Kamala Khan’s second bangle is hiding. Come with us as we break down every detail of this trailer for The Marvels.
S.H.I.E.L.D., S.W.O.R.D. and S.A.B.E.R.
The opening shot of The Marvels trailer is a space station with a subtitle calling it S.A.B.E.R. It’s the MCU’s version of the Peak, S.W.O.R.D.’s headquarters in the comics. S.A.B.E.R. doesn’t exist in the comics, so the MCU might have something different planned for their version of S.W.O.R.D. We got a hint that the massive floating space station might be under construction in the Spider-Man: Far From Home post-credits scene, and now we finally get to see it. It’s still a big reveal to be sure, and it’s a combination of several things we’ve seen come up across the Marvel universe in Phase 4. S.W.O.R.D. (or Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division in the MCU) made its first big debut in WandaVision when the Scarlet Witch created a small patch of altered reality. But S.W.O.R.D. has been hinted at ever since its founder, Maria Rambeau (Monica’s mother), appeared in Captain Marvel.
S.W.O.R.D.’s primary job is to defend Earth from extraterrestrial and super-human level threats. In the comics, the organization spent a lot of time opposed to the X-Men and was largely more aggressive than S.H.I.E.L.D. We saw some similar characteristics in WandaVision. Though the S.W.O.R.D. agents there didn’t turn out to be as bad as the Department of Damage Control, they took a very antagonistic stance. From The Marvels trailer, it looks like Nick Fury is using S.W.O.R.D. to investigate anomalies in space. But we may also see him use the space station to fend off the Skrulls in the upcoming series Secret Invasion.
The Marvels: Villains and Old Friends
When we watched Monica Rambeau float into that strange energy in space, we thought that the field might be another kind of Hex, which we saw in WandaVision. Another theory might be that it is some quantum anomaly that entangled the three Marvel superheroes by some unknown relationship with their powers. The former would make sense because S.W.O.R.D. recruited Monica to recheck this anomaly with her ability to manipulate light energy. But when we see our three protagonists change places, this might be some quantum entanglement that could tie together theories about the Quantum Realm and the Multiverse.
When Kamala Khan gets dropped into some unknown alien hallway, she appears right next to our familiar furry friend, the Flerken, the same one that scratched out Nick Fury’s eye in Captain Marvel. Flerkens contain pocket dimensions inside their bodies, making them capable of swallowing objects bigger and more powerful than themselves. It looks like we’ll be seeing more of these dangerous aliens as later in the trailer, there is a whole troop of Flerkens (or maybe they’re just cats, who’s to say?) trotting down some stairs, possibly on their way to battle.
Finally, one of the biggest and most missable details about this trailer is the look we get at Zawe Ashton’s character in the movie. Though her role is as yet undisclosed, she is playing what looks like a powerful Kree Accuser. She is holding Ronan the Accuser’s staff, or perhaps just another one that’s been made for her, and on her right arm is Kamala Khan’s missing bangle. In the comics, Ms. Marvel has two bangles on either wrist which grant her those extraordinary powers. Of course, we learned the source of her abilities was a bit different at the end of her Disney+ show. But when the Ms. Marvel series came out, fans wondered where the other one had gone. Now we finally know. Somehow, Ms. Marvel’s bangle, this strange spatial anomaly, and the Marvels’ powers are all tied together. We’ll have to wait till November to see how.
