Spring break is finally upon us, which means that millions of young people are headed off to tropical locations to party.
One young man, however, has decided to do something very different with his spring break.
Joshua Calloway is a 19 year-old who decided to spend his spring break picking up trash from beaches in Miami, Florida instead of partying with his friends. During just one Saturday afternoon, the Atlanta, Georgia native was able to fill three trash bags with litter that was left on the beach by tourists.
“Even though I’m on vacation, I still can help out,” Joshua explained.
Though he had gone to Miami for spring break with friends, he was not able to convince them to help with his efforts.
“I asked my friends if they were going to do it with me, and they were like, ‘Clean up the trash? No, I’m not with that,’” he said.
However, Joshua’s efforts did eventually come to the attention of Major Paul Acosta from the Miami Beach Police Department, who took to Twitter to praise him.
“So I told Joshua, you’ve been picking up trash for a long time instead of hanging out and listening to music,” Acosta wrote. “I asked why. He says he love animals and wants to take care of their home and ours.”
After Acosta’s post went viral, a small group of tourists joined Joshua in cleaning up the beach. God bless this young man for taking the time to help our environment in such a great way!
