Harry Maguire is United’s club captain but Fernandes has led the team in more than half of their games this season when the England defender has not been on the pitch.
But Fernandes was widely criticized for his performance and behavior during Sunday’s 7-0 defeat at Liverpool.
Former United captain’s Gary Neville and Roy Keane were very disappointed with the 28-year-old’s body language at Anfield.
Ex-England striker Chris Sutton then told BBC Sport on Monday that Fernandes “should never put on the armband again for Manchester United.”
But Ten Hag showed support for Fernandes on Wednesday during a press conference on the eve of United’s Europa League game away to Real Betis.
Ten Hag told reporters: “I think he is playing a brilliant season and has played a really important role in why we are in the position where we are.
“He is giving energy to the team. He is not only running a lot and in the highest intensity but also in the right way, in the right direction.
“He’s pointing and coaching players, inspiring them and the whole team.
“But no one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone has to learn. I have to learn and he will learn as well because he is intelligent.
“I am really happy to have Bruno Fernandes in my team. I’m really happy that Bruno Fernandes, if Harry is not on the pitch, is our captain.”
