In a significant indication about his future, Josko Gvardiol has revealed he wants to follow Christopher Nkunku ‘wherever’ he goes with RB Leipzig.
Nkunku is reportedly heading to Chelsea this summer after agreeing to join the Blues when his release clause comes into play.
‘The signs are very, very clear that he’s moving to Chelsea,’ Leipzig sporting director Max Eberl told BILD about the forward’s proposed £53million move.
And appears that Gvardiol, 21, is also willing to relocate after missing out on his own switch to Chelsea last summer.
Speaking to The Times, the Leipzig defender discussed the uncertainty surrounding his failed transfer as well as what the future holds.
Josko Gvardiol has opened up on his failed transfer negotiations with Chelsea last summer
Gvardiol said: ‘I was really confused because one month before the window starts I was upstairs with the sporting director and he says, “Yeah Josko, we are not going to sell you, we need you, we believe in you.”
‘I was like ok I am fine with this, I can stay here, I like it here, all I need is to work on myself, to play, to win something else. It was like this until the last two days.’
Gvardiol continued: ‘My agent called me and said that Chelsea is extremely interested and, of course, you definitely think about a serious offer from a huge club like Chelsea. Leipzig said they didn’t want to sell me.’
A move therefore failed to materialise and he admits dealing with the disappointment was challenging.
Gvardiol wants to follow Leipzig teammate Christopher Nkunku, who is believed to be heading to Chelsea this summer, ‘wherever he goes’
‘In the end I really struggled with that decision but we didn’t make an agreement. It is what it is,’ added the Croatian international.
However, rumours surrounding a potential transfer will surely begin to recirculate after Gvardiol’s comments on Chelsea-bound Nkunku.
Speaking about the French forward, Gvardiol said: ‘I have never seen before a player like Christoph, he is unbelievable.’
And in a remark that will get Chelsea fans purring, the World Cup semi-finalist added: ‘Every time I talk with someone about him I always say wherever he goes I want to go with him.’

Chelsea have splashed the cash under new owner Todd Boehly and spent a staggering £323million in the January transfer window.
With Nkunku set to arrive, plans already seem to be in motion for the summer and Chelsea fans will be waiting to see if Gvardiol’s move can also be pushed over the line this time around.
Despite the new signings, Graham Potter’s side have struggled for results since the January transfer window and currently sit in 10th place in the Premier League.
The Blues have a London derby against Tottenham up next – in which they will hope to kickstart the second half of their campaign.
