One question which has kept Titanic fans up at night since 1997 revolves around Jack’s heartbreaking death.
We know you know exactly what we mean. As Leonardo DiCaprio’s beloved hero hoists Rose (Kate Winslet) onto a floating door before freezing to death and sinking to the bottom of the ocean, viewers were left wondering if the door had room for two.
It’s one of the most controversial and debated topics in cinema, with some fanatics arguing Jack could have been saved if Rose simply moved over slightly.
In an effort to settle to the debate once and for all, the Academy-award winning actor was asked his opinion and since he did film the film, he can give us all an idea of whether he would have been able to squeeze on.
Leonardo sat down with his Once Upon a Time in Hollywood co-stars Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie for an interview with MTV back in 2019 when the highly contested question came up.
Barbie actress Margot revealed she was left in tears watching the scene, believing that Jack could have fit. “I thought it,” she shared. “I remember bawling my eyes out.”
Despite Margot’s anguish at the time, Leonardo simply replied: “No comment.”
Bullet Train star Brad wasn’t satisfied with Leonardo’s answer and cheekily asked the question again.
But Leonardo once again said: “No comment.”
In fact, he doesn’t even see it as a debate.
During an interview with BBC Radio 1, the Avatar: The Way of Water director said he has ‘never really seen it as a debate’.
He laughed: “It’s just stupid. There’s no debate.”
Citing another ‘90s Leonardo classic, Cameron added: “But if you really want to unearth all the dumbass arguments associated with it, I mean, let’s go back. I mean, yes—could Romeo have been smart and not taken the poison? Yes. Could he have decided not to bring his little dagger, just in case Juliet might stab herself with it? Yes, absolutely. It sort of misses the point.”
Well, there you have it folks!
Margot then jumped in and asked: ‘Did you mention it at the time were you like, ‘Should we make the door smaller?’”
The Django Unchained actor responded: “Like I said, I have no comment.”
It seems this debate will rage on for the foreseeable future.
