Thor’s future in the MCU is currently unknown, but the God of Thunder has only one good reason to return to the MCU, and it’s not about Love.
Although Thor: Love and Thunder left the door open for Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) return in future Phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the God of Thunder’s future is now unclear, but there’s one good reason for Thor to return to the MCU. The much-needed changes Thor went through in Thor: Ragnarok extended his stay in the MCU, becoming the first superhero to get four solo movies, but Hemsworth’s decision to take an indefinite break from acting has changed the expectations of Thor’s role in the rest of the Multiverse Saga and beyond.
At the end of Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor adopted Love (India Hemsworth), Gorr’s (Christian Bale) daughter who he brought back thanks to Eternity, and was last seen going on a mission with her, with Thor wielding Mjolnir and Love wielding Stormbreaker. Thor is expected to return in the crossover events Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, but even if he doesn’t return to save the multiverse with the rest of the MCU’s heroes, there’s one good reason for Thor to return, and it’s not to mentor Love so she can join the Young Avengers at some point, and it’s actually all about his brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

A Reunion With Loki Is Why Thor Needs To Return In The MCU
Thor and Loki’s relationship has been full of ups and downs. Loki served as the antagonist in Thor, a role he continued in The Avengers before joining forces with his brother in Thor: The Dark World, but he still continued with his own plans. Loki was driven by jealousy and anger as he felt betrayed by Odin, and since Thor, he tried to prove himself to everyone. The version of Loki Thor grew up with was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War just as he was redeeming himself, but the events of Avengers: Endgame led to Loki unknowingly creating a branch in the timeline, allowing the God of Mischief to continue being part of the MCU – but Thor doesn’t know this yet.
Loki’s death and “not going for the head” in Infinity War led to Thor’s transformation into Fat Thor in Endgame, and even though the God of Thunder seems to have finally found himself, the scene where he was stripped at Omnipotence City showed that he’s still not over the death of his brother, as he has a big tattoo on his back in memory of Loki. Thor needs to meet the current Loki to get the closure he needs and also to see that his brother was definitely capable of redemption and being a hero, as this Loki has redeemed himself in ways that the original one couldn’t (and also a lot quicker), which would also be beneficial to Loki as he has a very different idea of what his brother is like.
When & How Thor & Loki Could Reunite In The MCU
Of course, the biggest question is when and how Thor and Loki could reunite in the MCU. The only one confirmed to return in the Multiverse Saga is Loki, in the second season of his TV show, but it would be too early for him to reunite with his brother. Loki’s actions have been key to the development of the Multiverse Saga, so perhaps the best option for Thor and Loki’s reunion is Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars. These crossover events will bring the MCU’s heroes together one more time, now to fight Kang (Jonathan Majors), making it the perfect scenario for Thor and Loki to meet. The brothers could also work together as a real team with the same goal for the first time, making the reunion and the closure they get out of it even more emotional.
