Thieves often don’t care about their target — morals aren’t exactly high on their list in the first place.
However, sometimes divine intervention can thwart their plans, even when that intervention comes in the form of a brave 76-year-old nun.
It happened on January 14, when two thieves attempted to rob the Response to Love Center in Buffalo, New York. It’s a faith-based charity that helps the poor around the city.
The robbers were apparently going after some valuable copper pipes in the building, and erected a ladder to climb onto one of the roofs.
However, they didn’t count on being discovered by Sister Johnice Rzadkiewicz, the director of the Response to Love Center. She’d awakened early to pray and she heard some noise outside…
And as she told WKBW-TV:
So, I opened the door and saw a ladder — here’s a ladder over here, and I walked out, and I looked up, and said, ‘Get out of here. How dare you do this to God’s property — this is his mission!’
The elderly nun summoned all of her strength to yank the ladder off the building, leaving the crooks stranded on the roof.
She told the Buffalo News, ‘I threw the ladder down, which was huge as could be, and lo and behold, they ran away.’
The nun later said she could “feel the evil,” and she was surprised when she saw the ladder she’d knocked down. It was big and heavy, so it obviously took a great deal of effort.
Unfortunately, the thieves fled before police could arrive at the scene, so the suspects remain at large. But the Response to Love Center shared photos of the suspects on Facebook to help bring them to justice.
There’s a comical side to this, too: the thieves thought the downspouts at the Center were made of copper. But as it turns out, they were made of aluminum and “worth only pennies.”
Assistant Director at the Center, Mike Gilhooly, described Sister Johnice as a “tough cookie.”
She added:
They could have come here for food or clothing. They could have come for a kind word, some guidance, but they chose a different route.
That is not of God, that is evil. I just wish I could meet them.
Sister Johnice says she’s “been praying every day for these two thugs.”
She’s also keeping the ladder, which she has dubbed “Jacob’s Ladder,” naming it after the biblical story where Jacob dreams of a ladder that connects heaven and earth.
Some people worry that Christianity is under attack in today’s society, as some will point to the allegedly intentional silencing of the faith.
But sometimes, God makes a statement through humans — and this particular statement was, “don’t mess with faith-filled servants who only want to help you.”
