Due to geothermal influence, a section of the Halha River in the city of Arxan in northern China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region never freezes, even though the temperature can drop to minus 40 degrees Celsius.
During the winter months, the city of Arxan in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of northern China is always covered with white snow.
Everything around was covered with white snow and the rivers were frozen. There is only one “outside” exception .
It is the Khalkhyn Gol River. The river has never been frozen, despite outdoor temperatures that can drop to minus tens of degrees Celsius.

In winter, when the temperature drops to minus 40 degrees Celsius, the river’s water still flows as usual. Therefore, the Khalkh Gol River is also known as “the river that never freezes”.
The secret of the river lies at the bottom. Khalkh Gol flows through a geothermally active area near the city of Arxan. The heat from the riverbed heats the water above, making the river water always hotter than freezing. Thanks to that, the river never stops flowing.
