According to latest claims in Spain, Manchester United is interested in signing a Barcelona player.
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has reportedly ‘provoked anger’ within the hierachy at the La Liga giants by admitting he ‘wants to sign’ for Manchester United.
The former Ajax star was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford during the summer and was said to be one of Erik ten Hag’s key targets when he was named as United manager in April. Although the Dutch boss did not officially take over until just over a month later, the links with a move for De Jong were immediate and the speculation carried on throughout the summer.
United were believed to have made several offers to tempt Barca into selling one of their prize assets as the financial crisis that has enveloped the Catalan club continued to grow. A £72m deal was reportedly discussed but a move failed to come to fruition and De Jong remained at the Camp Nou for the first half of the season.
Despite suggestions he was frustrated the midfielder’s move to the Premier League fell through, Barca manager Xavi openly praised De Jong following a win against Villarreal and seemed to hint he had a long-term future with the club. He said: “He played really well because he understood his role and that he was the free man who had to divide the game. He enjoyed the match, he understood his responsibility very well. I am really happy for him, he deserves it.
“Today we understood that Villarreal played with a 4-4-2 so when we got to the side-line, our pivot was free and we believe that Frenkie is the best for this position. He has understood this demand well and also his defensive responsibility. He has been very good, especially in defence.”
However, reports of United’s interest remain and Spanish outlet Fichajes have now stated De Jong’s interest in signing for United has ‘aroused anger’ within the Camp Nou after he was said to have rejected a move to the Premier League during the summer when Barcelona’s financial issues were heightened.
