DC fans are predicting what James Gunn will reveal about the new DC Universe that is being developed by DC Studios. The DCU (formerly known as the DCEU) is about to have a whole new look with Gunn and Peter Safran now in charge of Warner Bros.’s superhero franchise. The two CEOs, whose roles went into effect on November 1, have been working on taking the DCU in a new direction for TV, film, and animation. However, not even two months in, reports have emerged signaling that the DCU as it currently stands is being almost completely rebooted. Gunn has come out to debunk some of these reports, but this has only led to more confusion and calls for an official DCU slate to be announced.
With Gunn confirming that a DCU slate will be revealed in January 2023, DCU fans are eager to learn what is coming, and speculations are already underway on what the DC Studios co-CEO is going to unveil in the new year. On Reddit, a thread kicked off with users sharing numerous theories on what announcements Gunn will be revealing in 2023. Many share the prediction that at least 3 to 6 movies will be unveiled by DC Studios. Superman is one of the heroes fans believe will be part of it given Gunn’s recent comments. What We Know So Far About James Gunn’s New DC Universe
Given how many rumors Gunn has had to debunk, he has also been adding some clarity about what the new DCU will become under DC Studios. Gunn is currently writing a new Superman movie, although it is unclear at this point if he will also be directing. His Superman project will focus on a younger Clark Kent as he deals with the early days of being a superhero. Despite not featuring Henry Cavill, Gunn has stressed numerous times that this will not be an origin story.
Conversely, Gunn has been coy about whether Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman will be part of the DCU. He confirmed that Gadot hadn’t been booted despite the scrapping of Wonder Woman 3 in its current iteration, but where she currently stands is unknown. Aquaman star Jason Momoa is rumored to be hanging up his trident but will reportedly be taking on a new DCU role, with many assuming it could be Lobo. Additionally, Gunn has talked about Elseworlds movies being actively developed and there are also attempts to get Ben Affleck to direct a DCU movie.
With Gunn looking to focus on both well-known and obscure DC characters, the slate reveal may be a varied one, including some of the A-list players but also unexpected heroes that many may not have heard of. Gunn has a good track record of taking unknown characters and reinventing them for the mainstream audience. Exactly when Gunn is revealing his slate to the public in January remains to be seen, but having a DCU that focuses on a wide range of DC characters will be exciting as they build out a new universe.
