Marcus Rashford of Man Utd has explained why he did not start the Reds’ triumph over Wolves, a game in which he subsequently came on and scored the game-winning goal.
The forward has been in fine form of late, for both club and country, but wasn’t named in the starting XI by Erik ten Hag for United’s trip to Wolves.
Ten Hag explained before the game that an “internal disciplinary” was the reason behind that, but Marcus went on to atone for his error after being introduced by the boss at half-time, coming off the bench to net the decisive strike in the 1-0 victory at Molineux.
Speaking to BT Sport after the final whistle, Marcus clarified what happened in the build-up to the game and hopes that a line can now be drawn under it.
“I was a little bit late for a meeting, I slept in, overslept. It can happen,” Rashford told BT reporter Des Kelly.
“It’s the team rules and it’s a mistake that can happen. Obviously, [I’m] disappointed not to play [from the start] but I understand the decision.
“I’m happy we managed to win the game anyway. I think we can draw a line under it and move on.”
Rashford’s 11th goal of the season for United, across all competitions, ensured the Reds would take all three points from a hard-fought contest in the Midlands.
The forward has now scored in all three of our games since the World Cup – each of which he and his team-mates have gone on to win.
“It’s a nice feeling for a forward to have that happening for them,” Marcus explained to MUTV’s Liam Bradford, when asked about his recent scoring run.
“It’s a difficult place for us to come to play our football and to win games, and we didn’t necessarily play our best football but we got three points.
“I think for a team that’s developing – we’ve striving to be the best we can be – you have to be able to win games in that fashion. I’m really pleased we managed to do it.”

The strike was also Rashford’s 100th goal involvement (65 goals, 35 assists) in the Premier League since his debut in the competition back in February 2016.
Reflecting on the landmark effort, Marcus picked out his favourite part of the goal when asked the question about it, but reserved praise for his team-mates’ contribution in the build-up.
“The finish is always the best bit, when the ball hits the back of the net, it’s a great feeling. I thought the overall build-up to the goal was good.
“They’re a difficult team to break down, I think at that moment they were five at the back as well, so there was not much space to play with, but we managed to find the gaps and make it count.”
