Johnny Depp is currently engaged in a legal battle with his former wife Amber Heard, who claims that the actor was abusive towards her.
As he tries to clear his name, Depp has called upon various famous witnesses to speak about his character. But, outside of the courtroom, positive comments made by his fellow co-stars are also being brought up by Depp’s fans, even those from interviews given many years ago.
The NY Post has put together a compilation of several of the comments about Depp made by his acting colleagues and here comes a look at five of the most interesting.
Angelina Jolie: He’s so funny and so fun to hang out with
Angelina Jolie is one of the many superstar actresses that Depp has starred alongside, and they had a lot of fun when shooting ‘The Tourist’.
“He’s just such a nice guy, so funny and so fun to hang out with,” Jolie said after finishing filming.
“He’s a real experimental and deeply feeling artist, who gives a lot and is very gracious on set to everybody and to his fellow actors. He’s just a pleasure.”
Penelope Cruz: We couldn’t stop laughing
Penelope Cruz worked with Depp on multiple films and missed partnering up in between them.
“I missed working with him through all those years because we had a great experience when we were shooting ‘Blow,'” she said when she signed up for the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise.
“Our problem was that we couldn’t stop laughing. That can really become a problem sometimes.
“I always say it’s a good problem to have because, in the end, that will reflect on the chemistry of our characters.”
Orlando Bloom: I knew he’d bring something unique
Orland Bloom was able to work with Depp on the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise and was thrilled to have that chance.
“I got to work with one of my heroes and to see how he goes about business, which was really inspiring for me at this stage in my career,” the actor later revealed.
“I knew he’d bring something unique to it the way he always does with his roles. I just didn’t know what it would be when I saw it, it was fantastic.”
Winona Ryder: I only know him as a really good, loving, caring guy
One of Depp’s former partners is Winona Ryder, who he dated between 1989 and 1993 after meeting her at the ‘Great Balls of Fire!’ premiere, later going on to work together on other occasions.
She has been vocal about the current conflict between Depp and Heard.
“I’m not calling anyone a liar, I’m just saying it’s difficult and upsetting for me to wrap my head around it,” she stated.
“We were together for four years, and it was a big relationship for me. Imagine if someone you dated when you were – I was 17 when I met him – was accused of that. It’s just shocking.
“I can only speak from my own experience, which was wildly different than what is being said.
“He was never, never that way towards me. Never abusive at all towards me. I only know him as a really good, loving, caring guy who is very, very protective of the people that he loves.”
Ellen Barkin: Johnny Depp was controlling
Despite all these glowing reviews, there is a colleague who has publicly criticised Depp and supported Heard during this legal battle is Ellen Barkin, who worked with Depp on ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’ and had a romantic relationship with him.
“He was controlling, asking me ‘Where are you going?’ and ‘Who are you meeting with?’,” she revealed.
“I once had a scratch on my back that got him very, very angry because he insisted it came from me having sex with a person who wasn’t him.”
