Among all of his three marriages, Tom Cruise’s time with his third wife Katie Holmes was deemed controversial by many due to rumors surrounding the actor’s involvement in her career. Following the actress’ departure from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy, many started speculating if Cruise was behind the actress’ decision in leaving the iconic franchise behind.

But this wasn’t the only thing that garnered immense controversy, as it was later speculated that  Cruise allegedly tried to alter Holmes kissing sequences with Aaron Eckhart in Thank You for Smoking. However, it wasn’t the case, as director Jason Reitman later debunked this theory.

Following the success of Thank You for Smoking, which garnered rave reviews from critics, many tabloids at the time started to speculate on Tom Cruise‘s involvement in the production of the movie. These reports claimed that the actor allegedly took exception to certain promotional materials for the film, where Holmes and Aaron Eckhart were engaged in kissing and other compromising scenes. However, this rumor was later debunked by the director, as he claimed that it might be an attempt to paint Cruise in a certain light. He stated,

“Well, first of all, there are no compromising positions in the film. It’s a very tame scene. I don’t want anybody to be disappointed when they see it. It’s nothing but humorous humping really. And the last time I talked to Tom Cruise, I was 14 years old and he made no mention of the scene then.”

But this wasn’t the only rumor that aroused during the mid-2000s showcasing the actor’s alleged possessiveness towards Holmes, as many speculated him as the reason behind her departure from TDK. However, this theory was also debunked by the actress, as she clarified her reasoning behind leaving the iconic franchise.

Despite garnering immense success after starring in Batman Begins, Katie Holmes‘ decision to leave the franchise came as a surprise to many. And following this, many tabloids started speculating about Cruise’s involvement in her decision to leave the franchise, which was later brushed off by the actress. The Gift star explained that she left the franchise due to her love for another passionate project, Mad Money, and has no regrets regarding her decision. She said,

“I had a great experience working with Chris Nolan [and] I’m sure it’s going to be a great movie. [But] I chose to do this movie, [Mad Money], and I’m really proud of it… I wish them all the best for this summer. I’m excited to see The Dark Knight.”

But despite maintaining a strong bond for most of their marriage, the duo eventually parted ways without revealing the reason behind their divorce to the public and have moved on with their life.
