An intense and captivating scene unfolded in the Selinda Reserve of Botswana, where a pride of lions attempted to cross the Selinda spillway. As predators by nature, lions are known for being dominant and territorial animals, and they usually do not stray from their territories without good reason. However, when circumstances require it, they must navigate through challenging terrain and face dangerous encounters. The lions were aware of the hippos in the area but still felt the need to cross the river.
Despite the lions’ awareness of the hippos, they were in uncharted waters that had already been claimed. The hippos, also territorial and dangerous animals, saw the lions as a threat to their territory. While the lions were most likely trying to cross the river, the hippos perceived them as uninvited guests entering their home. One hippo made it its mission to drive the lions out of the water, not necessarily to eat or severely injure them, but to make it clear that they were not welcome.
Two lions successfully crossed the river, but the other two turned back and swam to the other side. Fortunately, no lions were severely injured, but half of the pride was stranded on the other side, figuring out how to get back to their pride members. Great Plains Conservation shared the incredible footage and story of this nail-biting encounter, reminding us of the delicate balance of nature and the dangers that come with navigating through unfamiliar territories.
