Scarlett Johansson has admitted that she almost gave up acting after losing out on a dream role that went to Sandra Bullock.
In a candid new interview, the actress, 38, opened up on battling feelings of inadequacy after being rejected for major roles she’d auditioned for.
And after initially losing out on the part of Black Widow, which was originally offered to Emily Blunt, Scarlett told how she went on to feel ‘hopeless’ after then being overlooked for a role in Gravity.
That part went to Sandra Bullock, 58, who starred in the 2013 sci-fi film alongside George Clooney, 62, and saw her go on to be nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTAs.
Scarlett said that particular rejection ‘was sort of the straw that broke the camel’s back’ as it made her reconsider her future in the film industry.

Thoughts: After missing out on Gravity, which Sandra (pictured in 2022) got, Scarlett said that particular rejection ‘was sort of the straw that broke the camel’s back’ as it made her reconsider her future in the film industry
She told Variety: ‘I got turned down for two roles – the first was Iron Man 2 and then the other one was Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, I had wanted that role so much. It was sort of the straw that broke the camel’s back. I felt really frustrated and hopeless. Like, “Am I doing the right job?”‘
Meanwhile, the actress went on to question whether roles that she was actually offered were ‘fulfilling’ after her success in breakout film Lost In Translation groomed her to be a bombshell, with Scarlett stating it was ‘hard’ to break out of that ‘pigeonhole’ and change the narrative.
Questioning whether she’d make any headway with her career, she added: ‘The work I was being offered felt deeply unfulfilling. I think I was offered every Marilyn Monroe script ever. I was like, “Is this the end of the road creatively?”‘
Scarlett’s fortunes soon turned however when Emily Blunt was forced to pull out of Iron Man 2 due to contractual obligations with Fox and she was re-offered the role in the Marvel movie.
Though her role in the film wasn’t huge, it did go on to pave the way for other opportunities for the star.
She said: ‘That movie wasn’t going to move the needle forward in terms of how my character was written, but there was potential for what it could be — a potential for growth in subsequent films’.
Indeed, Scarlett did go on to once again make her mark, having bagged a critically acclaimed role on Broadway in A View from the Bridge – in which she says she had a creative and artistic ‘growth spurt’ – as well as appearances in Under The Skin Skin and Her.
While she’s currently filming scenes as a 1950s movie icon in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City alongside the likes of Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie and Maya Hawke.

Meanwhile, last month, Scarlett opened up about her decision to refrain from using social media on an episode of The Skinny Confidential Him & Her podcast.
While speaking to hosts, Lauryn Evarts Bosstick and husband Michael Bosstick, the actress revealed she is ‘too fragile a person to have social media.’
‘I can’t. My ego is too fragile,’ she admitted. ‘My brain is too fragile. I’m like a delicate flower.’
The two-time Oscar nominee, who is married to SNL star Colin Jost, went on to explain that apps like Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, are simply too addictive for her.

‘I become like a three-year old with their mom’s phone, where I get completely absorbed into it. So that’s why I know I can’t have it,’ the Black Widow star confessed.
The mother-of-two, who welcomed her son Cosmo with her spouse in August 2021, recalled using Instagram for three days through her company’s account.
‘I started realizing that I’d spent 20 minutes looking at somebody’s Instagram page, someone who worked for a friend of mine. I now know you have a Pitbull and two daughters and you live in like Burbank,’ she said.
Johansson said the her Instagram stalking session got her frustrated that she wasted ’17 minutes of time’ and caused her to want to ‘change’ her ‘life in all these ways that felt so bad.’
