Robert Downey Jr. is currently one of the most prominent actors in Hollywood, thanks to his exceptional range in movies. He is particularly well-known for his portrayal of Iron Man, which became the cornerstone of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although he has moved on from the role, the character’s legacy continues to cast a both positive and negative influence on his career.
The actor’s first movie after he gave up the incredible role did not do as well as he would have wanted. Although he stepped away from acting briefly and had a hand in the development of Netflix’s Sweet Tooth, he eventually chose to go back in front of the camera as with the projects like The Sympathizer, Sr. and Christopher Nolan’s highly awaited movie, Oppenheimer.
Robert Downey Jr. Was Looking For A Return In The MCU
Robert Downey Jr. did not immediately find success after he stepped away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His project after the massive success of Avengers: Endgame happened to be none other than Dolittle. The movie did underwhelmingly on an extreme level and proved to be an incredible flop. The movie’s bad performance was not looking good for his career as it only contributed to proving that the actor could perhaps not find success after Iron Man.
That did indeed turn out to be wrong as Downey still holds his name in some of the biggest upcoming projects with Christopher Nolan also being a name he tied himself to. However, the downfall of Dolittle gave him the thought of wanting to return to the MCU one day. The idea now might as well be thrown out of the box as the actor confirmed that he would not be returning. Although it was not the worst idea either.
Robert Downey Jr. Will Only Return To The MCU With Tom Holland
Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. worked together outside of the MCU as well. However, it was unfortunately in Dolittle. The movie not only underperformed, but it also shadowed the fact that the two actors worked together. They have shared a very familial father-son bond outside and within the franchise. He was even willing to negotiate his asking price if Holland was a part of it.
So when the question came about Downey returning to the franchise once again after his epic sacrifice. He simply stated that the only way it would even become a possibility would be if Tom Holland was involved in the movie or project as well. Although there were various rumors about the actor having multiple cameos in projects like Black Widow, and Ironheart, as well as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
