The sale of Chelsea a year ago was one of the stranger transactions in sports history. A vast club was bought from a sanctioned billionaire, who wasn’t allowed to make any money from the deal, while he was also owed a colossal amount by the club he was selling.
In the end the deal was done and Todd Boehly’s Clearlake Capital were able to take control – but what of the £2.5bn he paid?
The Times report that the cash is sitting in a bank account of Fordstam Ltd – the shell company set up by Abramovich to run Chelsea. He can’t access it, the government can’t just confiscate it, so it’s just sat there in the ether.
We’re not sure what happens with it next. Does it just sit there until the Russian invasion of Ukraine is over and the sanctions are ended? The story may yet have further twists to come.
