Chris Pratt opened up about the difficult audition process he experienced while trying to land a role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The 43-year-old actor revealed to Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday that he had a ‘rough run’ auditioning and losing out on multiple roles, including parts in the Thor and Captain America movies.
Pratt auditioned for so many different roles within the Marvel Cinematic Universe that he nearly gave up before landing Star-Lord in Guardians Of The Galaxy.
‘I auditioned for them all. I had a rough run with Marvel,’ said Pratt. ‘I auditioned for Thor, but not even to be Thor — but to be one of the sidekick guys, and I didn’t get a callback.’
He added, ‘It got to the point where I was never gonna audition for Marvel again. I was like, “This is stupid; I’m never gonna be in a Marvel movie.”‘
He explained, ‘Anything that came out that needed a guy that even remotely looked like me, I auditioned for in some way or another. I would either submit a tape, and then they would say, “Nah, we don’t need to see him.”‘
Pratt jokingly revealed that he came to believe, ‘Well, I definitely don’t have that ‘It Factor’ they’re looking for because they don’t even want me to come back.’
In addition to his leading role as Star-Lord, Pratt voiced the voice of Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which premiered earlier this month.
On Friday, Pratt’s superstar father-in-law Arnold Schwarzenegger praised Chris after seeing his new film Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.
The 75-year-old action star — who recently introduced the world to his pet mini pig Schnelly — gave a heartwarming shoutout to Pratt via Twitter, telling the Marvel mainstay that he is ‘very, very proud’ of him.
Arnold wrote: ‘I saw #GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol3 last night, and WOW. @prattprattpratt, you crushed it. A non-stop, perfect mix of comedy and action. I loved it, and I’m very, very proud of you.’
The third installment of Pratt’s blockbuster franchise will premiere in theaters on May 5, putting a final chapter on the adventures of Star-Lord and company, at least for the time being.
Chris is married to Schwarzenegger’s eldest child Katherine, 33, with whom he shares two daughters: Lyla Maria, two, and Eloise Christina, 11 months.
The former Governor of California has become very close with his beloved daughter’s A-list husband since their romance began in 2018.
‘I get along with him really well,’ Schwarzenegger told Jimmy Kimmel in 2019 – the year that Katherine and Chris tied the knot.
In addition to both being action stars, the Hollywood heavyweights immediately connected over their shared love of fitness.
Arnold told Kimmel: ‘Of course, the first thing when we met, [Chris] says, ‘Can we have a workout together? I need to have the inside scoop to the pumping iron.
‘Pumping iron was the decision-making factor, absolutely. We were in the gym, that was it.’
The Terminator icon went on to say that he was ‘blown away’ when his daughter told him that she was dating the Jurassic World hero.
‘I was blown away when my daughter was telling me that she was going out with him.
‘[I was like], ‘Do you have to be so competitive? I mean, do you have to have a guy that is taller than me, that is bigger than me, that is doing bigger movies than me … makes more money than me? What is going on here?”
In a touching moment, Arnold spoke to Kimmel about how grateful he was that Chris was such a kind and loving partner to his daughter.
‘I’m really happy that he is such a great guy,’ said the superstar. ‘Not only a very talented guy and a great actor and a great star and all this stuff, but a really kind man and kind to my daughter, which is the most important thing for me.’
The deeply religious couple connected in church, and Katherine recently described their meet-cute as ‘super sweet’ during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show.
And more children appear to be on the way for the pair as Katherine told Us Weekly that she’s open to having more children: ‘I come from a big family, so I love the idea of having a lot of kids around and a big family. Whatever God has in his plan for us is what we’ll do.’
