Fast X and Aquaman star Jason Momoa reveals his “Holy Grail” of film roles, comparing it to the likes of Braveheart and Dances With Wolves.
Though Fast X star Jason Momoa has many acclaimed roles and films, the actor revealed his “holy grail” of projects is still on its way.
While promoting Fast X during an interview with Men’s Health, Momoa spoke glowingly about Chief of War, calling it his “dream” as the show explores the unification of the Hawaiian islands from an Indigenous perspective. The Honolulu native, who co-created Chief of War, insists the historical drama is near and dear to his heart, given his roots there. “It’s like my Braveheart or Dances with Wolves,” he said. “I never thought it would be this big. It’s the hardest, most challenging, most demanding thing I’ve ever done. It’s the last big dream I have left. Everything else is just kind of ‘actor for hire,’ but this is my homage to my people. We have so many beautiful stories in Hawaii that no one knows about. All I care about is just doing right by my people.
The first two episodes of Chief of War will be done entirely in the Hawaiian language, with producer Brian Mendoza calling it the biggest Indigenous series ever made. According to Momoa, people of Hawaiian and Polynesian descent will relate to his small-screen effort and his ancestors’ struggle. He said the show is for “Indigenous kids growing up, understanding that we were warriors and what we come from and understanding there was a language that was stripped from us. Like most Indigenous tribes, everything’s taken from us. It’s like rebuilding and building these bridges back.”
Chief of War stars Momoa as Ka’iana and fellow Aquaman film franchise actor Temuera Morrison as King Kahekili, with the entire cast featuring actors of Hawaiian and Polynesian descent. The series is based on the true story of Ka’iana, a war chieftain who championed the unification of Hawaii during the 18th century. Episodes of the nine-episode-long limited series were shot between Hawaii and New Zealand.
Jason Momoa Is Fast X’s Next Villain
Meanwhile, Momoa features as the villain Dante Reyes in Fast X, the tenth film in the Fast & Furious franchise and the first of a two-part series finale. Dante is a central figure in Fast X as he’s out for revenge against Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) after he and his late partner Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) killed his drug kingpin father, Hernan Reyes, in his native Brazil during Fast Five. Teaming up with notorious cyberterrorist Cipher (Charlize Theron), Dante looks to harm Dom and the people he loves to get even for his father’s death.
Momoa also features in Fast X alongside Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Brie Larson, John Cena, Sung Kang, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Jason Statham. Directed by Louis Leterrier, Fast X may see a protagonist die at Dante’s hands after the helmer hinted some familiar faces might not make it through the final two Fast & Furious films. The latest sequel is one of the most expensive ever made, boasting a production budget of $340 million.
No release window has been confirmed for Chief of War’s premiere on Apple TV. Meanwhile, Fast X opens in theaters on May 19.
