The Rock, AKA Dwayne Johnson, may well be the biggest star that the WWE has ever produced.
Sure, there are guys like Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, and Stone Cold Steve Austin. But none of those guys have gone on to become that movie megastar that The Rock has.
Just ask our good buddy Eric Italiano, who sat down with The Rock with a 1-on-1 interview late last year.
The future WWE Hall of Fame inductee was just as legendary for his catch phrases on the mic as he was his moves in the ring. And any young wrestling fan worth their salt has tried to his those finishing moves, the “Rock Bottom” and the “People’s Elbow” on their friends at some point.
As it turns out, the latter was born from a joke he tried to play on a fellow WWE legend.
Former WWE champ and current WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H revealed the move’s origins in an interview in 2020.
“I honest-to-god, and this might be better to ask someone with a more crisp memory, I don’t know, but I believe the first time The Rock did The People’s Elbow, was in a match where we were trying to make Taker crack,” he said at the time.
Taker, of course, refers to WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker, who recently confirmed the story.
“I always thought that was the hokiest thing ever. But iconic, right,” he said of the move. “And always to get me to laugh. I mean, there was such a time period there where I think that was the company’s goal, was to see who could get me to break.”
For the uninitiated, the Undertaker was one of the company’s most serious characters. Though the man behind the character is not without a humorous side.
And as it turns out, The Rock knew exactly how to tap into that.
