Anticipation for the 2023 Met Gala on May 1st is at an all-time high. Who will show up on the red carpet this year? And more importantly, what will they be wearing? While the Internet is buzzy pondering who will make the guest list this year, Vogue is taking a look at some of the annual event’s most stylish attendees from years past. One A-lister who’s never disappointed? Selena Gomez. The singer, actor, and Rare Beauty founder has delivered many winning looks on the red carpet over the years, often slipping into gowns that embody a classic and glamorous sensibility.
For Gomez’s very first Met Gala—in 2014, celebrating the “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” exhibition—the star wore a plunging plum gown by Diane von Furstenburg. It’s a timeless silhouette that set the tone for almost every Met she’s attended since. In 2017, for instance—for the “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons” theme—she wore a plunging white Coach slip dress, embroidered with sweet little flowers and stars.
The star has taken a few risks too. At the 2015 Met Gala honoring “China: Through the Looking Glass,” Gomez wore a white form-fitting Vera Wang gown, punctuated with a giant bouquet of white orchids placed in her updo. She also sported her most futuristic look yet for the 2016 “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” celebration, when she wore Louis Vuitton’s embellished white slip dress with a leather corseted harness overtop. Even though extremely modern, it still called back to her signature shape, down to the saucy low neckline.
Will Gomez hit the Met Gala steps this year? Only time will tell—but judging on her striking fashion history at the event, we’re all hoping that she does.
