Thor’s mighty hammer Mjolnir is one of the Marvel Universe’s most powerful items, but one obscure character can destroy it.
Warning! Spoilers for Avengers: War Across Time #4 ahead!Mjolnir, the famous enchanted hammer of Thor, can be wielded by few Marvel Comics characters and damaged by even fewer. Made of the supremely powerful metal known as Uru, Mjolnir is Thor’s greatest and most famous weapon, with the Asgardian superhero using it to enhance his powers and fighting abilities and, in certain scenarios, determine if a being is worthy of potentially using it. One of Thor’s more obscure adversaries, however, is not only able to bypass Mjolnir’s restrictive enchantment but is also capable of destroying the legendary hammer.
In Avengers: War Across Time #4, by Paul Levitz and Alan Davis, Mjolnir has been stolen from Thor by Sindri, King of the Dwarves. As revealed in previous issues, Sindri forged the mighty hammer and can bypass its worthiness enchantment despite being far from worthy of the weapon. More shockingly, Sindri also reveals that he is capable of destroying Mjolnir. Sindri’s mastery over metals and his power over Mjolnir means that, with enough heat, he can unforge the weapon, making him one of the scant few characters who can destroy the hammer, a notable feat for such a character with so few appearances.

Thor’s History With Sindri
Sindri, notably, has only had two other appearances in the mainstream Marvel Comics timeline. Appearing in a pair of Journey Into Mystery issues from the 1960s, King Sindri is initially an ally to Thor but is portrayed in a more neutral light in his second appearance. Sindri has become an adversary to the Asgardian hero in War Across Time, however, after he is accidentally transported to Midgard by a device in the Baxter Building. Sindri’s scheme is merely to return home to Nidavellir by any means necessary.
Who Else Can Destroy Mjolnir?
Mjolnir is one of the most powerful objects in the Marvel Universe, so there are, unsurprisingly, few who can damage it. Among these few are Molecule Man, whose power over the atomic structure of objects allowed him to disassemble Mjolnir, and Perrikus, a Dark God whose own weapon (an enchanted scythe) bisected Mjolnir. Even Thor’s brother and nemesis, Loki, once destroyed the hammer by orchestrating a conflict between Thor and other supremely powerful cosmic beings, who, in one mighty clash, overwhelmed Mjolnir and destroyed it in the process. In each case, the hammer was repaired.
As one of the beings responsible for Mjolnir’s creation, it is no surprise that Sindri’s mastery over the hammer equals that of Thor and Odin. In a battle against the Avengers, Sindri proves nearly as formidable with the magic hammer as Thor himself, skillfully using it in melee combat, but losing the weapon once he throws it. Mjolnir always returns to its rightful owner once thrown, bringing the hammer back to Thor by the end of the issue.
