Thor went on a separate mission at one point during Avengers: Age of Ultron, but in the end, this mission made no sense and the MCU forgot about it.
Avengers: Age of Ultron left a bunch of loose ends that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has had to gradually pick up as it continues to expand, but it also has a couple of moments that continue to make no sense, such as Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) mission and the Water of Sight. After the success of their first adventure together, the Avengers returned for more missions as a team in Avengers: Age of Ultron – unfortunately, the second Avengers movie didn’t get to repeat the success and excitement of the first one, and it did more harm than good to the MCU.
After a mission to retrieve the Scepter from a HYDRA base, and due to their experience in the Battle of New York in The Avengers, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner created Ultron, a peacekeeping program that ended up becoming sentient and decided it had to eradicate humanity in order to save Earth. If that wasn’t enough, the Avengers came across Pietro and Wanda Maximoff, the latter implanting visions on the minds of each hero, and the one Thor got sent him on a mission to find the Water of Sight, but this never made sense within Age of Ultron and continues to feel out of place in the MCU.
Thor Looking For The Water Of Sight Felt Out Of Place
Although he claimed to be strong enough to not be affected by Wanda’s powers, Thor was still subjected to her hallucinations, where he saw the destruction of Asgard and very quick glimpses at the Infinity Stones, the Infinity Gauntlet, and the creation of Vision. After Clint Barton took the team to his home as it was a safe place for all of them, Thor, still tormented by the visions provoked by Wanda, decided to leave to learn more about the Infinity Stones and the strange being he had seen (Vision). With the help of Erik Selvig, Thor found the Water of Sight, a body of water where Norns (a group of beings who can perceive future events) manifest themselves, and if the water gods accepted him upon entering the pool, he would be able to revisit his previous vision in more detail, and that’s exactly what happened. Thor’s vision in the Water of Sight showed him the Infinity Stones and where they were, and the birth of a new being that would be key in destroying Ultron.
After that, Thor flew back to join his fellow Avengers and tell them what he learned, and he powered the machine that brought Vision to life. However, the way Thor decided to leave and how easily he and Selvig found the Water of Sight felt very out of place, and in the end, it was nothing more than a way to justify the creation of Vision and setting up the Infinity Stones and Thanos’ arrival. In addition to that, the MCU forgot about this place and its powers almost immediately, as it was never seen or mentioned again, even though it would have been very useful in subsequent adventures, especially in Avengers: Infinity War.
Why The Avengers Never Used The Water Of Sight Again
When Thor and Selvig got to the Water of Sight, Selvig mentioned that the stories he had heard about it didn’t end well, and the process of revisiting the nightmare seemed quite painful. In a deleted scene, Thor was possessed by a Norn, who answered Selvig’s questions about how to stop Ultron and told him more about the Infinity Stones, so it might have not been a process that Thor would have liked to go through again, and there was a risk of the rest of the Avengers not being accepted by the water gods. The Water of Sight would have been useful to stop Thanos even before the snap happened, but that might have made things a bit too easy for the Avengers and the rest.
