In a groundbreaking discovery, a team of scientists has, for the first time, identified a warping bubble – also known as a ‘warp bubble’ – that aligns with the mathematical principles of the Alcubierre engine. This engine is a hypothetical concept that could potentially allow for faster-than-light travel without contravening Einstein’s theory of special relativity.

This discovery is a remarkable breakthrough and offers the potential to travel to other star systems, albeit still in the distant future but closer than previously thought. The Alcubierre engine theory, developed by Mexican mathematician Miguel Alcubierre in the 1990s, proposes that a spacecraft can surpass the speed of light by warping space. This involves expanding space behind the ship while compressing it at the front, reducing the effective distance between two points and enabling the ship to travel faster than a photon traveling through unwarped space.
The discovery of the warping bubble occurred by chance while the team was working on a separate project for DARPA, the advanced technology division of the Pentagon. The original project aims to assess the possibility of extracting energy from a phenomenon known as a Casimir cavity, which describes the attraction between metallic objects separated by an extremely small distance. According to quantum field theory, there are fluctuations in the quantum vacuum within that distance, caused by an imbalance of the vibrational modes of these metallic elements. This imbalance generates a measurable force that is not gravitational and causes the plates to move closer together.

According to the study, the warping bubble discovered by the Boundless Space Institute team, under the supervision of Dr. Harold G. “Sonny” White, is not related to the Casimir cavity phenomenon. Instead, it was during one of the experiments to investigate the Casimir cavity phenomenon that the team identified a structure that matched the warp bubble.
The research indicates that “a structure has been discovered at the micro/nanoscale that predicts a negative energy density distribution that closely matches the requirements of the Alcubierre metric.” In an email interview with The Debrief blog, Dr. White clarified that what they have identified is not a warp bubble analog, but “a real warp bubble, albeit modest and tiny.” The scientist, who previously led the NASA Eagleworks research group, stated that the significance of this discovery is significant and opens up the possibility of future practical applications that were previously unimaginable.
Dr. White conducted research at NASA’s advanced propulsion research group, Eagleworks, to address the significant power consumption issues associated with Alcubierre’s equations. His work aimed to reduce the energy requirements, proposing a possible solution that could enable humanity to travel to other star systems, much like what is depicted in science fiction series such as ‘Star Trek.’ However, developing the theory and technology to manage energy needs and create strong enough materials is still centuries away.
This accidental discovery’s significance cannot be overstated, as it could lead to the development of groundbreaking technology that was once thought to be impossible. Dr. White presented his findings during a talk at the propulsion energy forum of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics last August, and the results and conclusions have been reviewed and published in the scientific journal ‘European Physical Journal.’ Despite the temptation to investigate the curvature bubble further, Dr. White says that they must first complete the research on the Casimir cavities funded by DARPA.

Dr. White has expressed interest in investigating the curvature bubble further by constructing a nanoscopic spacecraft, specifically a 1-micron-diameter sphere model located in the center of a four-micron-diameter cylinder. However, he did not provide any additional details regarding this investigation as it could potentially become classified as confidential by the Pentagon.
