Mykhaylo Mudryk has equalled a Chelsea record for this season
Chelsea were dealt their 12th league defeat of the season after falling to Brighton at Stamford Bridge, and their miserable campaign was summed up by a record equalled by Mykhailo Mudryk
Mykhailo Mudryk is on course to go down as one of the flops of the season, which makes the fact he’s now Chelsea’s leading assist maker all the more staggering.
The Ukrainian winger, who joined for £62m from Shakhtar Donetsk in January, has had a tough start to life at Stamford Bridge. Despite impressing on his debut against Liverpool, Mudryk has spent the majority of the season warming the bench and has looked desperately short on confidence whenever entering the fray.
He was a handed a rare start against Brighton on Saturday and set up Conor Gallagher for Chelsea’s opener, bringing his Premier League assist tally for the campaign to a grand total of two.
Remarkably, no one in Chelsea’s squad has managed to register more – Mason Mount, Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, Enzo Fernandez, Marc Cucurella and Thiago Silva all have two as well – summing up the utterly-torrid, goal-allergic season the club have endured.
The Blues weren’t ahead against Brighton for long, with substitute Danny Welbeck levelling the game with a header at the back post.
It was no less than the visitors deserved, with Roberto De Zerbi’s side dominating possession and the lion’s share of the best chances throughout the contest.

Julio Enciso then put the Seagulls ahead with 20 minutes remaining, and Frank Lampard’s side offered little in response.
The former Everton boss threw on five subs in an ambitious yet poorly planned attempt to swing momentum in the game, and although the Blues enjoyed most of the ball in the final quarter-of-an-hour they did little to trouble Robert Sanchez in goal.
The victory puts Brighton within touching distance of the top four, especially with Tottenham falling to a last-gasp Bournemouth winner. Chelsea meanwhile will want nothing more than this disastrous campaign to end.
