Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania almost featured the death of Hank Pym, but the character’s possible death is less shocking than his planned return.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania shockingly almost killed Hank Pym and made him come back to life through ants. The trilogy finale for the Ant-Man franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe saw all the members of Scott Lang’s family survive the trial that was the great fight against Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror in the Quantum Realm. While only Kang seemed to die in the movie, there was originally a big death planned for the Ant-Man family, with Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym biting the dust, although he would have lived on in a very weird way.
Speaking with Backstory Magazine, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness revealed that Hank Pym was going to die in an early version of the movie, but that would not be the last of him.
According to the writer, the idea was for Pym to die and be reanimated through his ants. Essentially, Hank would live on by becoming a new hive mind that would control the ants in a very strange plot, but one that undoubtedly feels like something that would happen in the pages of Marvel Comics. Check out the full quote below:
We were going to kill Hank at one point, and I was going to have him be, like, reanimated. His consciousness was going to live on through the ants, and he was going to be like mentally controlling them. Yeah, he was going to be almost like this hive mind of the ants, and I like that… that didn’t go too far.
Hank Pym’s MCU Future Seems To Point To Tragedy
Hank Pym seems poised to have a tragic ending in the future of the MCU. The character has already “died” once, when he, Janet, and Hope got turned into dust due to Thanos’ snap from Avengers: Infinity War. Then, Hank almost died and came back as ants in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. While the abandoned idea for the latest Ant-Man movie would have seen Hank continue in the MCU in some form, with his consciousness surviving to lead his beloved ants, it seems like the character has a more final destiny in store.
Douglas has already revealed that he wants Hank Pym to die in Ant-Man 4, if he were to return for another movie in the franchise. The actor’s wishes could very well come true, especially since it has now been revealed that Hank was almost a goner in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. With the idea already circulating behind the scenes at Marvel Studios, and Douglas himself supporting it, then Hank Pym might be in for a tragic moment in the near future.
While Douglas mentioned a death for Pym in a possible Ant-Man 4, which Marvel producer Stephen Broussard has revealed talks about have started, there is another possible movie that could see the character go in a big moment. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will likely feature the Ant-Man family in a prominent role, since they have experience dealing with Kang. More so, Hank’s wife Janet has a long rivalry with Kang, and one that would benefit from a tragic chapter such as the villain murdering Hank in the next Avengers. Marvel could even pick up the abandoned Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania idea for Hank, although that seems a bit farfetched.
