Dallas Mavericks All-Star Kyrie Irving is seven seasons removed from his 2016 championship run with current Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James. However, former teammates and competitors of the two have been fantasizing about a potential reunion between the former Cleveland Cavaliers.

Tristan Thompson — who was also on that 2016 Cavaliers team — went on the Draymond Green Show to talk about a move that many in the NBA world still yearn for:

Thompson described the tandem as a ‘match made in heaven,’ when they shared the floor. Both James and Irving elevated each others’ play in winning fashion. In their four-year run, Irving made the All-Star team in 2015 and 2017 and James gave him the green light in isolation to break down defenses and create his own shot.

In complementary fashion, Irving exploited holes for James to cut to the basket and be the recipient of a myriad of his flashy assists, and served as a highlight-worthy set-up man on the fast break.

Since their storied offseason split following a loss to the Golden State Warriors in the 2017 NBA Finals, Irving has yet to make it back to the Finals while James captured a fourth title in the 2020 NBA Bubble alongside Anthony Davis.

Now, Irving has been with the Mavericks since after the Feb. 9 trade deadline and has struggled mightily in the win column alongside superstar teammate Luka Doncic. The Mavericks are out of play-in contention as the No. 11 seed in the West.

Irving has been one of the trendiest names in all of professional sports over the last six years, and not always for his play on the floor. His departures from the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets came amidst major controversies.

Should things fizzle out in Dallas with Irving, both Green and Thompson have not shied away from wanting to see the two suit up together once more. James has been vocal about wanting to play with his son Bronny before retiring and has set up several business ventures in Los Angeles, but has not ruled out the possibility of leaving the Lakers altogether either.

Given James’ love for both Irving and Doncic, that latter point sets up a potential pipe-dream trade scenario for the Mavericks that will be discussed in more detail on DallasBasketball.com in the near future.
