Manchester United were credited with an interest in making Antonio Conte their manager in the past.
Chelsea staff reportedly told Manchester United that Antonio Conte would be difficult to deal with when the Red Devils were considering him as their new boss. The Blues’ intervention helped the club to dodge the bullet taken by Tottenham with the Italian’s spell as the club’s manager quickly unravelling.
Conte’s tenure as Spurs boss looks set to end in the coming days with chairman Daniel Levy ready to swing his axe. The Lilywhites currently sit fourth in the Premier League but the club have no chance of winning any silverware again this season and fans have grown increasingly unhappy with their style of play. Conte’s rant at his players after the 3-3 draw with Southampton appears to have been the final straw with anger now at fever pitch.
The way it has gone for Conte in north London suggests that United may have had a lucky escape after they considered appointing him in the past. He was regularly linked with the top job at Old Trafford while the pressure was on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but Red Devils chiefs never made the move and it appears that Chelsea staff may have had an impact on their decision.

The Athletic report that United sounded out Conte’s previous colleagues on what he is like to work with and the response from Stamford Bridge was not positive. Blues officials suggested he would be more difficult to work with than Jose Mourinho and he was never offered a job.
Given how the 53-year-old’s spell as Tottenham boss has gone, the Red Devils may feel like they have dodged a bullet. Erik ten Hag looks to be the perfect man to take the club forward, overseeing immense improvements during his first season in charge and it is less likely that he would have arrived had the Italian ever been appointed.
