A 30-year-old Californian who scooped a record $2billion Powerball payday has bought a $4million California mansion – just days after splashing out on a sprawling $25million estate in nearby Hollywood Hills.
Edwin Castro, who won the jackpot after buying a ticket at his local gas station, expanded his real estate portfolio with the aesthetic five-bed, five-bath home eight days after closing the deal on his first mega-mansion.
His new Japanese-inspired estate is enclosed by tropical palm trees and a stunning mountain backdrop, boasting modern finishes and a sun-soaked Zen patio befitting a billionaire-lottery winner.
Manicured gardens and a sun-soaked pool complete the home’s exterior, while the inside is decked out with numerous luxury amenities.
The Altadena home is only a short drive from where Castro grew up, and sources told TMZ the unexpecting billionaire hails from a ‘wholesome family’.
A former high school athlete, Castro rose the ranks of the Boy Scout program before studying architecture at Woodbury University in Burbank – with his college days clearly contributing to his eye for luxury real estate.
His latest purchase comes with its own home theater, private office and expensive artwork, which is sure to be improved given Castro’s hefty new bank balance.
The estate encircles a stunning courtyard oasis, with an authentic Zen Garden and saltwater pool serving as the ideal escape from the California heat.
An open plan gourmet kitchen and living room are the focal point of the home, including a breakfast bar and huge granite topped island.
Sliding doors open out to a tropical garden, while surround sound audio speakers are fitted throughout the lavish home.
And after receiving the lump sum payout of $997 million last month following his win in November, his new California home cost less than half a percent of Castro’s lottery jackpot.
The listing for the property describes it as a ‘harmonious’ living space, boasting top of the line finishes in every corner of the home.
‘Prepare to be stunned as you walk in through the oversized pivoting front door where you are greeted by rich Jatoba wood floors,’ it reads.
‘Turning right you will enter the dramatic living room with an inset lighting design, floor-to-ceiling windows bathing the home in natural light, and looking over the gorgeous Japanese well-manicured gardens, which is a theme throughout the home.’
The California home also features a two-car garage, solar power energy system, and an electric vehicle charging port.
If Castro tires of the $4 million estate, he is only around 20 miles from his second California complex, which he bought for $25 million just eight days prior.
Purchasing the lavish home less than a month after his shock Powerball winning came through, Castro’s larger property is situated behind the iconic Chateau Marmont suites.
Counting Ariana Grande and Jimmy Kimmel as his neighbors, the sprawling 13,578-square-foot hillside home which comes complete with a full outdoor kitchen, gym, wine cellar and infinity pool.
It also features an infinity pool, movie theatre and sauna as well as two separate garages that can hold up to seven cars.
The pad was first listed back in July 2022 for $30 million but it appears Castro managed to shave $4.5 million off the headline price.
Other amenities include a game room and bar as well as a fitness studio with a hot and cold plunge, a dry sauna and steam shower.
Meanwhile the double-height glass stairwell offers extensive city views while two fire pits and a built-in barbecue area sit outside.
His real estate expansion comes after it was revealed Castro is being sued by a fellow California resident who alleges he had the winning ticket and it was stolen from him.
Despite the legal challenge, Castro reportedly finally claimed the $997 million lump sum payout just last month after scooping the winning ticket in November.
At the time of the win, lottery director Alva Johnson said Castro wanted to remain private and had declined an invitation from lottery officials to attend the press conference.
In a prepared statement Castro said: ‘As much as I am shocked and ecstatic to have won the Powerball drawing, the real winner is the California public school system.’
Public schools in California act as a beneficiary to the state’s lottery.
It means the education system received over $156 million as a result of the record-breaking win.
