Charlie Cox appears as Matt Murdock in a Daredevil: Born Again set photo, and he can be seen sporting new red glasses after previous appearances.
A new Daredevil: Born Again set photo reveals the first look at star Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock in the series. Cox’s turn as Matt Murdock in Daredevil: Born Again will mark his first project as a lead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After Netflix’s Daredevil was canceled in November 2018, the actor would go years without reprising the role, before a cameo return in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, and a two-episode arc in 2022’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
Twitter fan account Daredevil: Born Again Updates shared the first look at Cox as Matt Murdock on set of Daredevil: Born Again, with his costume including a new set of red glasses that looked like they were ripped straight from the comics.
Daredevil’s return amid the MCU’s Multiverse Saga is interesting, as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has reiterated at different times the character’s importance to going forward. Daredevil appears to be poised to be the face of the MCU’s street-level heroes, alongside Spider-Man. While Marvel could have used a multiverse explanation for Cox’s return, it appears that will not be the case for Daredevil, but there is a way in which the MCU version of Matt Murdock could differ from the Netflix series.
How Daredevil: Born Again Can Further Explore Matt Murdock
Daredevil: Born Again is going to be the biggest Disney+ MCU series by far, with the show’s first season getting an 18-episode order — showing where Daredevil fits in the MCU timeline — which doubles that of the second longest MCU series at the streamer. Audiences have shown their dissatisfaction with the pacing and length of Disney+’s MCU series, so the fact that Daredevil: Born Again is getting 18 episodes, five more than a regular season of Netflix’s Daredevil, is exciting for the possibilities the show presents to Cox’s Matt Murdock.
There were a number of factors that contributed to the success of Netflix’s Daredevil, and among them, was the fact that main star Cox had complete control of both facets of the hero. While Cox’s exploits in the suit as Daredevil could get to even higher points with possible MCU cameos and character returns in Daredevil: Born Again, the series can do an even better job of developing Matt Murdock’s life when not acting under his alter ego. One of the key elements of Netflix’s Daredevil was the relationship between Cox’s Matt Murdock and his friends, Foggy Nelson and Karen Page, played by Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll, respectively.
Reportedly, both Henson and Woll are either missing from the series or getting their roles recast, but Daredevil: Born Again can further explore Cox’s Matt Murdock even if the character’s best friends are missing. With its whooping 18 episodes, Daredevil: Born Again has the time needed to handle Murdock’s life as a lawyer with proper care. Spider-Man: No Way Home kept Daredevil’s identity a secret, focusing only on Matt as a lawyer. Daredevil: Born Again can continue with that focus, by showing more of Matt’s work in court — which Cox has shown he excels at — developing another side of the hero that was not shown enough in the Netflix series.
