‘There’s so much judgment it’s crazy!’: Scarlett Johansson discusses the pressure that comes with being a mother adding that sometimes it feels like ‘the Dark Ages’

Scarlett Johansson has talked about motherhood after welcoming her second child Cosmo with husband Colin Jost in August.

The Back Widow star told Vanity Fair that it was difficult being under scrutiny from others.

‘I feel like a lot of things have moved forward in the past five years in terms of women’s empowerment, but that thing remains sort of in the Dark Ages. So much judgment it’s crazy,’ said the beauty.

‘I wanted to be able to have my own feelings about my changing body,’ said the Tony award winner, ‘without other people also telling me how they saw me, whether it was positive or negative.’

Johansson is also mother to daughter Rose, six, from a previous marriage.

The 37-year-old Johansson said her pregnancy helped her realize how much pressure is put on pregnant women.

It is especially challenging when someone is struggling with contradicting emotions.

The actress shared that even some of her closest friends did not quite get it.

‘It’s funny how much stuff people put on you when you’re pregnant—their hopes or their judgment or their desire, a lot of that is put on pregnant women,’ said the icon.

‘I would have a lot of people saying things to me immediately, like, “How great, oh my God, that’s wonderful.”

‘And while I was definitely excited to be pregnant in some ways, I also had a lot of not-great feelings about it, and that would be scrutinized by—I’m talking about, like, women that were close to me.

‘You expect it from men, but from women, it’s like, “Come on, girl, you’ve been through it.”‘

The Marriage Story lead revealed that at least one girlfriend gave her the kind of support she needed.

‘One friend, when I told her that I was pregnant—she knew I was trying to get pregnant—she was just like, “Oh s**t. Great, but not great.” And I was like, “You’re a true friend.”‘

Also this week Scarlett was seen talking about her skincare line The Outset on Instagram. She said the skincare game has become ‘complicated’ so she started a line that ‘reduced the noise.’

She likes the ‘ease of simplicity’ with the line.

And she says the line is easy to pair with other items because there are no parabens or sulfates in the mix.

Johansson said she had been working on the project for five years because she wanted the product to be safe.
