Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s 19-year ownership of Chelsea came to an end on Monday as the sale of the club to Todd Boehly’s consortium was finally completed
Roman Abramovich’s time as the owner of Chelsea came to an end on Monday after the takeover of the club was finally completed.
Having purchased the club in 2003, Abramovich was forced to sell after being sanctioned by the UK government due to his links to Vladimir Putin in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A consortium fronted by Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly are the new owners of the Premier League giants with Abramovich starting life after Chelsea.
With that in mind, here is a run down of what the Russian billionaire is doing now, including his net worth and reports of him buying a new football club.
Where he is living
Thanks to his considerable wealth, Abramovich has built up an impressive property portfolio with several UK homes believed to be worth a combined £200million. He also has properties in France, Russia, the USA, and the Caribbean.
Abramovich purchased his 15-bedroom Kensington mansion for £90million in 2009, with the property now valued at £150million. However, his sanctions affected his ownership of the mansion, and cleaners were even unable to enter the property after they were announced.
He also reportedly failed to pay his £10,000 rent to the Queen for the land the mansion is built on after being sanctioned by the government.
In addition to the mansion, Abramovich also has a £22million penthouse on the Thames and a west London flat which he bought for £8.75million.
New football club?
With his sanctions forcing him to sell Chelsea after almost two decades as owner, Abramovich has since been heavily linked with a return to football.
Back in March, it was reported that he had entered talks to buy Turkish Super Lig side Goztepe. The club has had limited success during its 96-year history but competes in one of football’s fiercest derbies against local rivals Karsiyaka.
Goztepe have since denied having any dealings with Abramovich and the club were relegated this season, bringing to an end their five-year stay in the Turkish top flight.
It remains to be seen who Abramovich’s next club will be if he does make a comeback in the sport.
Current net worth
Abramovich’s net worth appears to have taken a serious hit after he was sanctioned in the fallout of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year.
He was recently valued at £6billion in the Sunday Times Rich List as he was ranked as the 28th richest person in the UK. That is a drop of 22 places from 2021, when he was ranked at number six.
His net worth is also understood to have plummeted by more than half, with the rich list having valued the 55-year-old at £12.2billion just a year ago.
