Newcastle are one victory away from winning their first major trophy in 54 years, as Eddie Howe‘s side take on Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.
The Red Devils have yet to claim a significant honour since the Europa League in 2017 and are thus equally eager to bolster their portfolio of trophies at the weekend.
United head into the final in fine form having crushed Leicester 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday, while Newcastle have struggled for form of late, losing 2-0 to Liverpool at St James’ Park.
But the Magpies should not be underestimated having emerged the Premier League’s surprise package this campaign, currently fighting Tottenham for the final Champions League spot in the top four.
As a barren spell without silverware prepares to come to an end, Sportsmail has taken a look at when and how each Premier League club last won a major trophy.

2022 – MANCHESTER CITY – PREMIER LEAGUE
Pep Guardiola wrapped up a fourth league title in five seasons on a dramatic final day when substitute Ilkay Gundogan scored twice in a 3-2 comeback victory against Aston Villa.
It left City champions by a point ahead of Liverpool leaving Guardiola with the chance of following Herbert Chapman, Bob Paisley and Sir Alex Ferguson to land three-in-row.
2022 – LIVERPOOL – FA CUP
Jurgen Klopp became the first manager in the club’s history to win all four of the big competitions when they edged Chelsea 6-5 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw.
Kostas Tsimikas’ winning kick completed a domestic cup double for Liverpool who had beaten the same opponents, also on penalties, in the League Cup final earlier in the season.
2021 – CHELSEA – CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
A strong German influence helped Chelsea’s upset Manchester City 1-0 in the final with Kai Havertz scoring the winning goal for manager Thomas Tuchel.
It was the club’s second European Cup triumph but within 15 months both owner Roman Abramovich and Tuchel had left Stamford Bridge for a new but equally high-spending era.

2021 – LEICESTER CITY – FA CUP
An outstanding strike by Youri Tielemans enabled Leicester to lift the FA Cup for the first time in their history with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea under Brendan Rodgers.
Four of the Foxes players – Kasper Schmeichel, Wes Morgan, Marc Albrighton and Jamie Vardy – were survivors from the team that famously won the Premier League in 2015-16 at 5,000-1.
2020 – ARSENAL – FA CUP
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice in a 2-1 win against Chelsea to earn Mikel Arteta a trophy in his first season with the club.
It didn’t do the striker much good in the long-term however as he was jettisoned out of the Emirates with the new manager determined to build a new team in his image.
2017 – MANCHESTER UNITED – EUROPA LEAGUE
Jose Mourinho showed he still had the trophy touch as United beat Ajax 2-0 in Stockholm to add Europa glory to the League Cup won earlier in the season against Southampton.
Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored and Wayne Rooney was a late substitute in his final appearance for the club. United last went six years without a trophy in the early 1980s.

2008 – TOTTENHAM – LEAGUE CUP
It’s ironic that the least-heralded of Tottenham’s managers remains the last to collect a trophy, Juande Ramos guiding them to victory against Chelsea with Jonathan Woodgate’s winner.
Since then big-hitters like Harry Redknapp, Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte have tried and failed, leaving Harry Kane still awaiting his first winners’ medal.
1996 – ASTON VILLA – LEAGUE CUP
Gareth Southgate was part of the last Villa team to win silverware 27 years ago when goals by Savo Milosevic, Ian Taylor and Dwight Yorke downed Howard Wilkinson’s Leeds 3-0.
Boss Brian Little left less than two years later and Unai Emery is the 14th manager since to try and emulate his achievement of leading Villa to a major honour.
1995 – EVERTON – FA CUP
Joe Royle’s so-called dogs of wars upset Tottenham in the semi-final and then pulled off an even bigger shock to defeat Manchester United 1-0 thanks to Paul Rideout’s winner.
The trophy cabinet has been bare ever since despite attracting a number of top-class managers from Walter Smith and David Moyes to Roberto Martinez, Carlo Ancelotti and Rafa Benitez.

1992 – LEEDS UNITED – LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

Howard Wilkinson remains the last title-winning English manager and captain Gordon Strachan had been sold by Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford just three years earlier.
1990 – NOTTINGHAM FOREST – LEAGUE CUP
The last of Brian Clough’s seven major trophies featured an all-English starting line-up that beat Joe Royle’s Oldham Athletic 1-0, Nigel Jemson scoring early in the second half.
Clough’s retirement in 1993 signalled a downturn in Forest’s fortunes until Steve Cooper led them back to the Premier League last year after an absence of 23 years.
1980 – WEST HAM – FA CUP
Around 500,000 people turned up for Second Division West Ham’s victory parade after they shocked Arsenal 1-0 – and they remain the last team outside the top flight to lift the cup.
Trevor Brooking uncharacteristically scored the winning goal with his head to silence TV pundit Brian Clough who said pre-match ‘he floats like a butterfly, and stings like one too’.

1980 – WOLVES – LEAGUE CUP
Britain’s most expensive player Andy Gray scored the only goal as Wolves caused a major upset against reigning European champions Nottingham Forest managed by Brian Clough.
Instead of a stepping stone to further success, Wolves hit financial trouble later in the decade and slipped all the way back down the fourth division before bouncing back in recent years.
1976 – SOUTHAMPTON – FA CUP
Second Division Saints caused a major upset by beating Manchester United with little-known Bobby Stokes scoring the winner in the last FA Cup Final attended by Queen Elizabeth II.

Both Brighton and Fulham – who faced off at the weekend – have never claimed a major trophy
Five current Premier League clubs have never won a major trophy in their history.
Fulham have been champions of the second tier on three occasions and were beaten by West Ham in the 1975 FA Cup final.
Crystal Palace were twice second division champions and beaten FA Cup finalists in 1990 and 2016, both to Manchester United – the latter defeat memorable for Alan Pardew’s dad dance.
Brighton were also beaten in the ‘…and Smith must score’ FA Cup final against Manchester United in 1983 and have been champions of the third tier.
Bournemouth’s biggest prize was winning the Championship in 2015 under Eddie Howe. Brentford go all the way back to 1935 for their greatest success, the second division title.
