Who would win in a fight between Earth-616 Captain Marvel and Scarlet Witch? The MCU can now finally answer that question after the events of Phase 4.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness made Scarlet Witch into a villain, which can help settle the MCU’s Captain Marvel vs. Scarlet Witch debate. Two of the most powerful characters in the Marvel universe, Wanda and Carol Danvers, never actually interacted despite fighting side by side in Avengers: Endgame. Scarlet Witch did face Earth-838 Captain Marvel Maria Rambeau in Doctor Strange 2, but a Wanda vs. Carol Danvers fight has yet to happen.
Debates on who is the MCU’s strongest Avenger have happened since Phase 1, when Thor and Hulk were arguably the most powerful Marvel heroes. The MCU has now expanded itself and is much closer to the comics than when it all started, meaning that the MCU’s power levels have also increased. For example, Phase 4’s Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel would easily defeat Phase 1’s Thor and Hulk. The biggest question, however, is who would win in Scarlet Witch vs. Captain Marvel fight.
Captain Marvel & Scarlet Witch Now Have A Reason To Fight
The “Captain Marvel vs. Scarlet Witch” debate, which began in Avengers: Endgame and continued through Phase 4, can finally be settled now that Captain Marvel and Wanda have a reason to fight. While superheroes tend to fight each other a lot before realizing they are on the same side, such as Thor vs. Iron Man in The Avengers or Ant-Man vs. Falcon in Ant-Man, there was virtually no reason for Carol Danvers and Wanda to fight up until now. Both Wanda and Captain Marvel were Avengers who helped defeat Thanos, and the MCU’s version of Civil War had already happened before Captain Marvel even joined the franchise.
However, after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Scarlet Witch is now a villain in the MCU. Wanda may have given up her plans at the end of Doctor Strange 2 and destroyed the Darkholds across the multiverse, but Scarlet Witch is still far from redemption. Doctor Strange 2’s Scarlet Witch was one of the most menacing and powerful Marvel villains in years, and while the Darkhold played a huge part in it, Wanda cannot go back to being an Avenger as if nothing has happened. Scarlet Witch could play an anti-hero role in the Multiverse Saga, which would make a Wanda vs. Captain Marvel fight easier to happen.
Captain Marvel & Scarlet Witch Were The MCU’s Strongest Avengers In Endgame
Captain Marvel and Wanda were the most powerful Avengers during Endgame by far. The only other Avenger who might have been as powerful as Carol and Wanda during Endgame was Thor considering his power-up in Thor: Ragnarok, but the fact that the MCU’s God of Thunder spent five years without fighting or training has to be taken into consideration. Up until Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, the MCU had not showcased how powerful Wanda could be. While the MCU could not reference Wanda’s mutant background, reducing Scarlet Witch’s creative reality-bending powers to just energy manipulation was not a good decision. Fortunately, Endgame at least showed what Wanda’s potential truly was.
Wanda, who would only be called Scarlet Witch in Phase 4’s WandaVision, almost destroyed Thanos by herself at the beginning of Endgame’s final battle. While Marvel would still not dive into what Scarlet Witch’s powers can do in the comics, Endgame saw Scarlet Witch stopping Thanos as if it was nothing. Thanos had to sacrifice a significant part of his army to stop Wanda; otherwise, he would have been killed. Captain Marvel, on the other hand, had already showcased her powers in her solo movie – 2019’s Captain Marvel. Still, seeing Captain Marvel fighting Thanos in hand-to-hand combat without breaking a sweat established how powerful Carol Danvers truly is.
Captain Marvel Vs. Scarlet Witch: Who Is More Powerful After Phase 4?
Until Endgame, Wanda’s powers were relatively similar to those of Captain Marvel in the sense that they were both Infinity Stone-energy based. Captain Marvel was more fitted for direct combat, though, while Wanda would often fight using telekinesis and energy manipulation. Therefore, by the end of the Infinity Saga, Captain Marvel was likely stronger than Wanda, all things considered. However, after discovering the true nature of her powers in WandaVision and accessing the Darkhold magic in Doctor Strange 2, Scarlet Witch is now more powerful than Captain Marvel. Essentially, Scarlet Witch might be the most powerful MCU character after Phase 4.
Granted, Carol Danvers did not appear much in Phase 4 except for two post-credits scenes. Still, Captain Marvel’s powers and skills must not have changed a lot since Endgame. Wanda, on the other hand, is now closer to the Marvel Comics version of Scarlet Witch – a character who can be as powerful as the story asks for. Scarlet Witch’s probability manipulation powers are even difficult to be described, but the Illuminati fight scene in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness showed how there is no limit to what Wanda can do. In fact, Scarlet Witch beat the Earth-838 Captain Marvel, suggesting she would also defeat Carol Danvers in a fight.
