A 21-year-old Macomb County man who was pulled over for speeding Tuesday night spent the evening in jail after police found loaded weapons in his car, according to Michigan State Police.
“It is unclear what the drivers intentions were with the weapons,” MSP said in a statement.
State Police said troopers, including a newly assigned cadet, attempted to stop the Sterling Heights driver on Eight Mile and Dequindre roads in the southwest portion of Warren.
The investigation showed the driver didn’t stop immediately and troopers saw him place a rifle in the back seat. That’s when the motorist finally pulled over to the side of the road.
As troopers walked up to the vehicle, they saw a loaded HP MP5 rifle on the backseat. The firearm is often referred to as a popular submachine gun that is often used by security forces and the military.
Investigators said the driver admitted to having the rifle on his lap while driving. During a search of the vehicle, troopers discovered a loaded 9mm FN pistol was found under the driver’s seat and a 30-round drum magazine for the rifle was discovered in in the glove compartment.
The driver did not have a valid CPL that would allow him to carry the weapons in his car. Both firearms were seized.
The driver was held at the Macomb County Jail pending a case review by the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.
