British scientists have used X-rays, artificial intelligence (AI) and 3D printing techniques to recreate the mysterious nude woman – a “lost treasure” 120 years old that Picasso hid under other famous paintings.
According to The Telegraph, research from University College London (UCL – University of London, UK) has brought the beautiful painting “The Lonesome Crouching Nude” – “The naked woman crouched alone” to the afterlife. 120 years hidden under another masterpiece.

Neuroscientist Anthony Bourached and physicist George Cann from UCL usedX ray, artificial intelligence (AI) and 3D printing techniques to find the mysterious woman they know exists, but seems to have been “erased from history”. They believe that she is hidden behind the painting “Meal of the Blind”, an important painting of the Blue Age by the Spanish artist.Picasso, was painted in 1903 and is currently on display in the Metropolitan Museum (New York, USA).

Analyzing Picasso’s strokes in other paintings, they “trained” the AI an algorithm to simulate what the original painting would look like from the meager data that the X-ray irradiation yielded. They believe that Picasso overlaid this painting with reluctance because the Blue Age was a period when Picasso was new to the profession and struggled with expensive materials.
The reconstructed painting will be unveiled at the Morf Gallery in London on October 13, part of London’s first “Deeep” AI art festival. The researchers hope this technique will help recreate many other paintings by Picasso as well as other artists. Artists often overwrite their works when they can’t find a new canvas or are simply not satisfied with the old work.
